The Haka

The Haka is an old Maori war chant that the tribes performed before a battle. It is delivered with fierce shouting and thunderous stamping. If anyone want to see such a performance nowadays visit a match of the All Blacks (the NZ Rugby Team). Here's a small movie (Quicktime 4, 2.2MB) which gives an impression of this.

Here is an english translation of one of the most popular Hakas.

Ka mate, ka mate
Ka ora, ka ora
Ka mate, ka mate
Ka ora, ka ora
Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru
Nana i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra
Upane, upane
Upane kaupane
Whiti te ra

It is death, it is death
It is life, it is life
It is death, it is death
It is life, it is life
This is the hairy man
Who caused the sun to shine again for me
Up the ladder, up the ladder
Up to the top
The sun shines
